Reading Supplement

Hello Students,

As you all know, we will be using the above book as our supplementary reading.  By now, I hope you have the book, and if not I've provided some alternatives below.  We really can't begin to discuss and learn about this book until everyone is up to speed, so I encourage you to get the first novella, "Rita Hayworth & The Shawshank Redemption" before you come back from Chusock.  

Hopefully the holiday gives you ample time. In any case, you will need the book, and I hope you use it as a way to enrich your vocabulary, and definitely as a way to familiarize yourself with "Americana" - the study of American culture.  This is a period piece taking place in the past, and you'll come across a lot of expressions and cultural references that you should want to investigate.  This will play a role in your Reading Journal.
